Formulations for topic mucosal and/or oral systemic administrations containing a mixture based on lactoferrin, more effective in iron uptake, for the prevention and treatment of various pathologies

The project aims to evaluate the efficacy of bovine lactoferrin (bLf) and the Valpalf® formulation, prepared by combining bLf with sodium citrate and sodium bicarbonate, in in vitro models of inflammatory bowel diseases. Caco-2 cells and THP-1 cells differentiated into macrophages will be used to simulate enterocytes and immune response, respectively. Experimental models will reproduce ulcerative colitis (lipopolysaccharide stimulation) and Crohn’s disease (interferon-γ stimulation and infection with an E. coli bacterial strain). The project will analyze the effects of treatments on bacterial invasion and survival, inflammation, oxidative stress, and iron homeostasis, in order to clarify the therapeutic potential of lactoferrin in its two formulations, standard and Valpalf®.
