A Ghent University professor must commit in advance to supervise the PhD, and a supervisor holding a PhD at the partner university or research centre in the South must co-supervise.

Mandatory: the partner institution must certify a full-time local PhD scholarship or salary for the 24 months in the South, with at most 10% of time on teaching or other tasks. Partial funding or fee waivers do not qualify.

Intended for candidates at the start of their PhD. Those who have already started must still need at least 36 months of research at the start date, and must pursue a Ghent University (or joint) PhD degree.

Funding and what it does not cover
A scholarship of approximately €2,550 a month, paid only for the periods spent at Ghent University (24 months in total). The Ghent supervisor also receives a bench fee of €310 a month and an €8,000 travel budget that covers part of the travel of the student and both supervisors. The 24 months in the South must be funded locally.
