Check eligibility

In short

The International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea in Hamburg takes interns for three months. Applications for July to September 2027 close on 31 December 2026. The internship is unpaid. Nationals of a developing country on the OECD DAC list, which includes Tunisia, can ask for help from a trust fund for living and travel costs.

Who can apply

Nationality
ITLOS sets no nationality condition for the internship. For the trust fund, applicants must be nationals of a developing country on the OECD DAC list and normally live there. Tunisia is on the DAC list, so a Tunisian living in Tunisia can ask for funding.
Studies
At least three years of university studies, and enrolled in a degree or postgraduate course at the time of application and during the internship, or graduated within the last 12 months.
Age and language
Applicants should normally be 32 or younger and have a good command of English or French.

Funding and what it does not cover

Interns receive no pay. Those awarded money from the Trust Fund for the Law of the Sea receive a monthly allowance for living costs and may receive help with travel. ITLOS does not publish the amount.

Covered

  • A monthly living allowance for interns awarded trust-fund support
  • Possible help with travel costs for trust-fund interns

You pay

  • Pay
  • Travel, housing and living costs for interns without trust-fund support
