How to apply

  1. Check the offer for Tunisia

The official 2027–28 country list opens the Research Fellowship and the PhD scholarship to Tunisian applicants, but not the art scholarship.

  2. Check the age and degree rules

For 2027–28 you must be born after 31 December 1991 and finish your master's by 31 July 2027 (30 June 2027 for ETH Zurich).

  3. Find a supervisor in Switzerland

Approach a professor at an eligible Swiss institution: a cantonal university, a university of applied sciences, a university of teacher education, EPFL, ETH Zurich, an ETH Domain institute or IHEID. Their support letter is required.

  4. Write the research proposal

Use the FCS/ESKAS form: 5 pages maximum, including a summary for non-specialists.

  5. Submit online through GO ESKAS

For Tunisia the 2027–28 call opened on 20 August 2026 and closed on 13 October 2026 at 11:59 PM Swiss time. Email or paper applications are not accepted.

  6. Arrange your references

Give the email addresses of two professors; the platform invites them to upload their recommendation letters themselves.

  7. Wait for the decision

The FCS announces decisions by the end of May 2027 at the latest, for a start on 1 September 2027.

  8. Plan for the next round

The 2028–29 cycle will be advertised from August 2027; the Tunisian dates are to be confirmed.

Documents to prepare

  • Full CV
  • Motivation letter (max. 2 pages)
  • Research proposal on the FCS/ESKAS form (max. 5 pages)
  • Support letter from the Swiss supervisor
  • Short CV of the supervisor (max. 2 pages)
  • Email addresses of two professors for recommendation letters
  • Degree certificates and transcripts, with certified translation if not in English, French, German or Italian
  • Passport copy (both passports for dual nationals)
  • Graduate school admission confirmation (PhD at graduate schools only)
  • Residence permit or registration confirmation, if already living in Switzerland

From Tunisia

Tunisia appears on the official 2027–28 country list with two scholarship types: Research Fellowship and PhD. Your contact point is the Embassy of Switzerland in Tunisia (22 rue Platon, Z.A. Kheireddine, 2015 Le Kram; tunis@eda.admin.ch; +216 71 191 997), but the application itself goes only through the GO ESKAS online portal. The Tunisian deadline for this cycle was 13 October 2026, earlier than in most other countries, so it is wise to prepare the 2028–29 round during the first half of 2027: the call is due to be advertised from August 2027, and its Tunisian dates are to be confirmed. Diplomas and transcripts issued in French can be uploaded as they are; documents in Arabic need a certified translation. The official page sets no language test, but your Swiss supervisor or doctoral school may expect a certain level, so ask them early. A common mistake is writing to Swiss professors at the last minute without a defined project; reach out several months before the call opens, with a short, clear project summary. Another trap is fake 'Swiss scholarship' emails asking for money for visas or insurance. Applying is free, and Opporiva never applies on your behalf.
