Scholarship motivation letter: template and examples for 2027 applications

A scholarship motivation letter answers the funder’s criteria with evidence, not adjectives. Here is a five-part template, before-and-after examples and the verified rules of two major programmes: Eiffel (2027 round) and Chevening (2027–28 cycle, now closed).

Scholarship motivation letter: what the panel is really looking for

A scholarship motivation letter is not an autobiography. It has to show three things: that you understood the programme, that you meet the stated criteria, and that you can explain your path with facts you will be able to defend in an interview.

Panels often read hundreds of files. Generic lines such as “I am passionate and highly motivated” do not stay with them. What stays is a clear goal, a logical link between your past and the course you want, and a credible plan for what comes next.

Treat the letter as an answer to the funder’s selection grid. If the call mentions academic excellence, leadership or impact in your home country, every paragraph should feed at least one of those criteria.

Letter, career plan or essays: read the call before you write

The document you are asked for does not always have the same name, and that matters. Depending on the programme, you may need a free-form motivation letter, a “career plan” (projet professionnel), a statement of purpose, or several short essays that each answer a specific question.

Before writing the first line, note down from the official page:

  • the exact name of the document and the question or questions asked;
  • the maximum length (in words, characters or pages);
  • the required language;
  • who submits the file: you, or the host institution;
  • the deadline for the current round.

For Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters, the European Commission’s EACEA agency points to each master’s official website and advises contacting the consortium directly about courses, the application procedure and available scholarships. It also notes that not every master’s in the catalogue offers Erasmus Mundus scholarships. The same page says master’s students from all over the world can apply, and that most programmes ask for applications between October and January for courses starting the following academic year. Letter requirements therefore vary from one master’s to the next: check each one.

A five-part scholarship motivation letter template

This structure works for most free-form, one-page letters. Adapt it to the question asked and to the programme’s limit.

  • Part 1, the opening: the exact name of the programme and course, then one concrete reason they fit your plan. One or two sentences are enough.
  • Part 2, the relevant background: your studies and experience, but only what prepares you for the course. There is no need to go back to secondary school if it adds nothing.
  • Part 3, the evidence: two or three verifiable achievements, each linked to one of the funder’s criteria (academic results, a project you led, a responsibility you held, community work).
  • Part 4, the choice of course: why this programme, this institution and this country, with specific elements (modules, a lab, an internship, a method) rather than generic praise.
  • Part 5, the plan after the scholarship: what you will do when you return or when the programme ends, in the short and medium term, followed by a short, polite closing.

Keep paragraphs short, the tone plain and one strong idea per paragraph. If the programme sets a limit, stick to it strictly: going over is never an advantage.

Example sentences: weak versus strong

The examples below are illustrations written by Opporiva. Do not copy them: replace every detail with your own facts.

Opening

  • Weak: “I have always dreamed of studying abroad.”
  • Strong: “I am applying to the water management master’s at [institution] because its module on wastewater reuse addresses the exact problem I studied in my final-year project in Sfax.”

Evidence of leadership

  • Weak: “I am dynamic, organised and a team player.”
  • Strong: “In my second year, I coordinated a team of six students for an awareness campaign; we ran four workshops in two secondary schools and trained twelve volunteers.”

Plan after the scholarship

  • Weak: “I want to contribute to my country’s development.”
  • Strong: “In the short term, I am aiming for an engineering role in a consultancy that specialises in water; in the medium term, I want to lead reuse projects for local authorities.”

The difference comes down to three words: specific, verifiable, linked to the programme. Every number you quote must also appear in, or be provable from, your CV, transcripts or certificates.

Eiffel scholarship 2027: a one- or two-page career plan

For the France Excellence Eiffel programme, 2027 round, Campus France’s official guide does not mention a “motivation letter” but a “projet professionnel” (career plan). For both the master’s and doctoral strands, it must be written in French or, failing that, in English, in one or two pages. It may be supported by the opinion of people outside the institution, for example a company.

Points checked in the 2027 guide:

  • the file is submitted only by the French higher education institution, not by the student; an application sent directly by a student is declared ineligible;
  • the candidate’s CV is two pages maximum for the master’s strand, in French or English;
  • for the doctorate, a presentation of the thesis project of up to five pages is added, setting out the topic, objectives, hypotheses, originality and impact;
  • the online submission deadline for institutions is Wednesday 6 January 2027;
  • institutions receive the results in the week of 12 April 2027;
  • the programme is reserved for candidates of foreign nationality, which includes Tunisians; dual nationals who hold French citizenship are not eligible;
  • at master’s level, candidates already studying in France are not eligible;
  • the age limit is 29 for the master’s strand and 35 for the doctorate; the 2027 guide requires a birth date after 31 March 1997 (master’s) or after 31 March 1991 (doctorate), but still refers to the “2026 selection”, so have the institution confirm these limits.

In practice: Campus France states that its timetable is not meant for students, who must ask the institution for its own deadline. Contact the international relations office or the head of the master’s early: that internal deadline necessarily falls before 6 January 2027. The language level expected is the one the course requires.

Chevening: four essays in English, and no AI

Chevening does not ask for a single letter but for four written answers. According to its official guidance on the online form, they cover leadership, building professional relationships, your course choices and your career goals. Answers must be written in English, and the form sets word limits you must respect; their exact value is not given on the page we checked and is to be confirmed for the next cycle.

Chevening looks for evidence of leadership and influencing skills, the ability to build and maintain professional relationships, and a realistic and achievable career plan. You must choose three different master’s courses in the UK: if you enter the same course at the same university twice, you cannot be considered for a scholarship.

On artificial intelligence the rule is clear: using AI software to generate your answers is strictly prohibited, Chevening says it uses detection tools, and copied or fraudulent content leads to disqualification. The programme also advises drafting your answers in a separate document before pasting them into the portal, which logs you out after 15 minutes of inactivity.

You apply under your country of citizenship, wherever you currently live. Chevening has a dedicated page for Tunisia, but it states that applications for the 2027–2028 scholarships are closed: use these rules to prepare for the next cycle, whose timeline and conditions are to be confirmed on chevening.org.

Evidence, honesty and the use of AI

Every claim in your letter must match your CV, transcripts and certificates. A panel that spots a contradiction between the letter and the attachments starts doubting the whole file.

When a funder asks for leadership or community impact, give one measurable example rather than a list of adjectives: how many people, over what period, with what result.

On AI, check each programme’s rule. Some ban it entirely for writing answers, as Chevening does. Even when nothing is stated, never submit generated text that you have not rewritten in your own words and with your own facts: it sounds generic, it can contain errors, and you will have to defend it in an interview.

Do not invent an achievement, a figure or a support letter. An honest, modest application is worth more than a brilliant file that collapses at the first check.

Before you send: the final checklist

Read the official page one last time, then go through this list:

  • every mandatory question has an answer, in the order requested;
  • the word, character or page limit is respected;
  • the language is the one the programme requires;
  • the name of the programme, course and institution is correct everywhere (a recycled letter with the wrong name is, in practice, fatal);
  • every number and date can be found in your CV or supporting documents;
  • the file is in the requested format and clearly named (your name, the programme);
  • someone who knows your work has read it for clarity, without inventing content for you.

Finally, keep a copy of every version you send: you will need it to prepare for the interview.

Opporiva is free and never applies on your behalf. We help you find programmes and understand their rules; the decision always belongs to the funder, and no letter guarantees a scholarship.

Frequently asked questions

How do I write a motivation letter for a scholarship?

Start by noting the question asked, the length limit and the language on the official page. Then follow five parts: an opening with the exact programme name, relevant background, two or three verifiable pieces of evidence, your choice of course, and your plan after the scholarship. Every claim must match your CV and supporting documents.

Can I use a scholarship motivation letter example I found online?

Use a template for structure, never for content. Panels quickly spot generic sentences, and some programmes, such as Chevening, disqualify copied or AI-generated content. Replace every sentence with your own facts.

Do I need a motivation letter for the Eiffel scholarship?

For the 2027 round, Campus France’s guide asks for a one- or two-page “projet professionnel” (career plan), in French or failing that in English, plus a CV. The file is submitted by the French institution, not by the student: contact the master’s you want to learn its internal documents and timetable.

What does an Erasmus Mundus motivation letter require?

For Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters, each consortium sets its own procedure. Check the official website of the master’s you choose to find out whether a letter is required, its length, its language and the deadline, to be confirmed for the 2027 intake.

Is a motivation letter required for Türkiye Scholarships?

On its evaluation page, Türkiye Scholarships says its expert committee considers, among other things, the content of the letter of intent, alongside academic record, career goals and the consistency of your choices. The exact length and instructions for 2027 are to be confirmed in the application system on the official site turkiyeburslari.gov.tr. The programme is open to citizens of all countries; its general calendar shows an application period from 10 January to 20 February, with 2027 dates to be confirmed.
