French language test in Tunisia: what to know before you register

Looking for a French language test in Tunisia usually means answering a specific request: a Campus France application, a university, a Canadian immigration process or a nationality application. The right test is therefore not "the best-known one", but the one the body reviewing your file accepts, at the level it requires.

In Tunisia, the Institut français de Tunisie runs six French certifications: DELF and DALF, the TCF tout public on computer (TP-SO) and the TCF IRN, the TCF Canada, the TCF Québec, the TEF Canada and the TEF Québec. Exams take place at its hubs (including Tunis, El Mourouj 1, Nabeul-Hammamet, Béja, Sousse, Sfax and Kébili), but not every hub offers every test: check the calendar for the exam you choose. According to Campus France Tunisia, the Alliance Française network in Tunisia also offers French certifications.

This guide also covers German tests (TestDaF, Goethe-Zertifikat, DSH) for anyone aiming at Germany. For English (IELTS, TOEFL, Duolingo and others), see our dedicated guide "Which English tests are actually accepted" (which-english-tests-are-actually-accepted); we do not repeat it here.

One simple rule first: read the official page of the institution or procedure you are targeting, write down the exact name of the test it asks for and the minimum level, and only then book a session.

TCF tout public, TCF for the DAP, TCF Canada: which version do you need?

The TCF comes in several versions that are not interchangeable. The Institut français de Tunisie describes them as follows:

  • TCF tout public on computer (TP-SO): open to anyone aged 16 or over whose first language is not French, for academic, professional or personal purposes. It has compulsory papers and two optional additional papers (speaking and writing).
  • TCF IRN: for integration, residence or French nationality procedures.
  • TCF Canada: for people aged 16 or over who must prove their French level for an economic immigration or citizenship application filed with IRCC.
  • TCF Québec, TEF Canada and TEF Québec: also offered, each for the procedures that ask for them.

Fees shown by the Institut français de Tunisie on 23 October 2026, next to the 2026 session calendar (the page gives no year for the fees):

  • TCF TP-SO, compulsory papers: 335 TND;
  • additional speaking or writing paper: 220 TND each;
  • TCF TP-SO with the writing paper: 555 TND;
  • TCF IRN: 625 TND;
  • TCF Canada: 880 TND.

Fees for the 2027 sessions are to be confirmed.

Registration points to remember: you first book an appointment online, then complete registration in person during the stated period; someone else can do it for you with a photocopy of your ID card. You must leave 30 days between two TCF or TEF sessions, and results are available five weeks after the test. Fees are non-refundable: in a case of force majeure (illness, a death in the family, a strike…), an absent candidate can only have the registration postponed, by sending proof to the language centre within 48 hours. Payment is in cash, or also by bank card at the Tunis hub; payment by cheque is suspended for now.

How long a TCF certificate stays valid is not stated on the pages we checked: it is to be confirmed with the test centre before you register.

DELF and DALF: a French diploma that does not expire

DELF (levels A1 to B2) and DALF (levels C1 and C2) are diplomas, not score reports. According to the Institut français de Tunisie, they are open from age 16 and remain valid with no time limit. That is their main advantage over the TCF: once you hold a DELF B2, it serves several applications over several years.

Fees shown by the Institut français de Tunisie in October 2026 (the year they apply to is not stated on the page):

  • DELF A1 or A2: 220 TND for an external candidate, 140 TND for a language-centre student;
  • DELF B1 or B2: 300 TND (external), 230 TND (student);
  • DALF C1 or C2: 360 TND (external), 300 TND (student).

Published calendar for the November 2026 session (Tunis, Mutuelleville, El Mourouj 1, Sousse and Sfax hubs): online appointments from 21 to 29 September, registration from 30 September to 2 October, written papers on 2 November and speaking tests from 2 to 6 November, results on 30 November 2026. Registration for this session is closed and the 2027 sessions are not yet published; their dates are to be confirmed.

The downside: DELF and DALF run on fixed dates, only a few times a year (the published 2026 calendar has a single session, in November). If your application must go out in a few weeks, the TCF, which runs every month at several hubs, is usually more realistic.

Campus France Tunisia: which French test do you need to study in France?

For an application through Campus France Tunisia, a French certification is compulsory unless you are exempt: without it (or without an invitation to one of these exams), the file is not admissible. Provisional TCF-SO results are accepted.

The test depends on the procedure:

  • first year of a university bachelor's (L1, DAP procedure), L.AS, PASS and the national schools of architecture (years 1 to 5): the TCF for the DAP, including the additional writing paper, or DELF/DALF;
  • all other applications (second and third year of a bachelor's, master's, etc.): the TCF tout public (TP/SO) or DELF/DALF.

Tunisian applicants are not exempt on nationality grounds: Campus France points out that Arabic is Tunisia's only official language, so Tunisian candidates are subject to the TCF for the DAP. Tunisia is not on the list of French-speaking countries exempted for other applications either.

You are, however, exempt according to Campus France Tunisia if, among other cases, you:

  • hold DELF B2 or DALF C1/C2;
  • scored 14/20 in the TEF;
  • hold the French baccalauréat, or a French higher-education degree obtained in France;
  • have been invited to a selection interview or competitive exam at a French institution;
  • were selected under an agreement between Tunisian and French public institutions;
  • hold a government or public-body scholarship for your year in France;
  • are going to France for a doctoral thesis, or are already pre-registered at a French institution.

The pages we checked set no common minimum level. Campus France Tunisia advises checking each institution's website for the programme's prerequisites: an institution may require a test even when you are exempt. The exact calendar for the 2027 intake is to be confirmed on the Campus France Tunisia website.

Studying in Germany: TestDaF, DSH or Goethe-Zertifikat?

For a programme taught in German, the German Embassy in Tunis states on its study visa page that you must include DSH or TestDaF language proof. For a programme taught in English, it mentions IELTS, TOEFL or another certificate (see our guide on English tests).

TestDaF in brief, according to the TestDaF Institute:

  • results are reported per skill (reading, listening, writing, speaking) at three levels, TDN 3, 4 and 5, which cover CEFR levels B2 to C1;
  • TDN 4 in all four parts counts as language proof for unrestricted admission to all programmes at German universities;
  • each university may still accept a lower level in one or more skills, depending on the programme;
  • the certificate has no expiry date, but some universities only accept recent proof;
  • results are available after about 3 weeks for the digital TestDaF and about 6 weeks for the paper-based TestDaF.

The DSH (Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang, the German exam for university entrance) is named by the embassy and the DAAD, but no session in Tunisia appears on the pages we checked: where, when and how to take it is to be confirmed directly with the university you are targeting.

Goethe-Zertifikat levels A1 to B2 are mainly used for work, vocational training or life in Germany. The Goethe-Institut presents the C1 as preparation for studying in Germany, but advises future students to check with their institution whether this certificate is enough: it varies from one university to another.

For a DAAD scholarship, the DAAD generally lists TestDaF, DSH, DSD, Goethe-Zertifikat, the Austrian ÖSD, telc Deutsch and onSET Deutsch as acceptable German certificates, and asks for a certificate no older than 3 years at the time of application; each scholarship call states the proof it expects.

Taking the Goethe-Zertifikat or TestDaF in Tunisia: dates and fees

The Goethe-Institut Tunisia offers Goethe-Zertifikat exams from A1 to C2 (with youth versions from A1 to B2), the TestDaF and the Goethe-Test PRO for the workplace.

Examples of sessions and fees shown for 2026 (pages checked on 23 October 2026):

  • Goethe-Zertifikat B1 for adults, in Tunis: sessions from 22 to 24 September and from 10 to 12 November 2026; 580 TND for the full exam, or 305 TND per module;
  • Goethe-Zertifikat C1, in Tunis: session on 6 October 2026; 700 TND for the full exam, or 355 TND per module;
  • a reduced fee (B1: 530 TND for the full exam, 255 TND per module; C1: 650 TND, 305 TND per module) applies if you took a German course at the Goethe-Institut that ended less than six months before the exam.

Registration for these 2026 sessions is closed. Dates and fees for 2027, and for the other levels, are to be confirmed on the Goethe-Institut Tunisia pages.

For TestDaF, dates are set centrally by the TestDaF Institute and places are allocated in booking order. On 23 October 2026, the Goethe-Institut Tunisia page showed only two dates from 2024 (digital TestDaF) and no fee, so the 2027 sessions and fee are to be confirmed with the Goethe-Institut Tunisia before you rely on them.

How to choose your language test in four questions

Before paying for a registration, answer these four questions, in this order:

  • Who will read my certificate? Campus France, a university, IRCC, an embassy or an employer do not all accept the same tests. Write down the exact name on their official page (for example "TCF Canada", not just "TCF").
  • What level is required? A B2 does not carry the same weight whether it comes from a DELF, a TCF score or a TestDaF TDN. Compare against the institution's own grid, not an equivalence found elsewhere.
  • When must the result be ready? Allow five weeks for results at the Institut français de Tunisie and 3 weeks (digital) to 6 weeks (paper) for TestDaF, plus the registration window. An exam taken too late is of no use.
  • How long must the certificate stay valid? DELF, DALF and TestDaF do not expire, but some institutions want recent proof; the DAAD, for example, generally asks for a certificate less than 3 years old.

If you are aiming at both France and Germany, do not look for a single test: there is none. Prepare the language of the programme you prefer first.

Opporiva is free and never registers you for a test or submits an application on your behalf. We point you to the official pages; registration and payment happen only with the Institut français, the Goethe-Institut or the body concerned. No test guarantees admission or a visa.
