UBC International Scholars Program — need-and-merit undergraduate awards, including the Karen McKellin and Donald A. Wehrung awards

UBC's International Scholars Program gives need-and-merit awards of up to the full cost of a degree and living expenses to international students entering from secondary school. It includes the Karen McKellin International Leader of Tomorrow Award and the Donald A. Wehrung International Student Award. Your school must nominate you; the award application is due 15 November 2026.

Who can apply

Criteria stated by the funder on the official source.

Nationality
You must be 'an international student who will be studying in Canada on a Canadian study permit'. No country is excluded. Tunisia is not named, but Tunisian citizens meet this rule. The Donald A. Wehrung award targets students from impoverished or war-torn areas.

Entering UBC directly from an accredited secondary school (graduated no earlier than June 2026 for 2027), applying for a first undergraduate degree, with all As or equivalent. Several degrees, including dual and joint degrees, are excluded.

Financial need
You must prove significant financial need with official documents: it must be impossible for you to pursue a UBC degree without meaningful financial help, and your family cannot pay a significant share of costs.

One nominator (counsellor, principal or administrator) and a different teacher referee. A school or registered non-profit can nominate up to two students for UBC Vancouver and one for UBC Okanagan.

You must meet UBC's English Language Admission Standard by 31 January 2027. Students who do not meet it for direct entry may qualify for Vantage College and the Vantage One Excellence Award.

UBC says the awards range in value up to the full cost of a student's academic programme and living expenses. The amount depends on UBC's assessment of your financial need.
